Simon Says: Tips for the Intrepid Time Traveler by Rysa Walker

Simon Says

Rysa Walker has become a must read for me. A very good friend kept urging me that I was missing something before I picked up Time Bound and he was right. The characters that Ms. Walker develops are very believable and have very captivating personalities that make you love or hate them. Simon Rand, affectionately known as Rat Bastard, is one you hate. Even after this glimpse into the inner mind of this character I really have no real affection for him. He is, a bastard in more than one definition of the word. Simon is a time traveler thanks to his wizardry with the Chronos key and in my opinion, with his personality being a mixture of idiot savant with a touch of evil, he grows up fast and hard and doesn’t have any qualms about who’s rules he breaks. Even the master mind behind the Cyrists, Saul, who plans every move he makes like a chess game he always wins is a little more likable than Simon.

In this novella, we see Simon as a kid before he truly was twisted by the fates of time and crossing times over and over again. His connection with his “friend” Kiernan is just beginning to be explored and it gives me a little bit more empathy for him…..just a little bit though. Especially when we see that his obsession and his determination to find out what truly happened cause him to set the history of a nation spiraling because he jumps before thinking it through. This along with his other experiments with the key as well as his work for the Cyrists, Brother Cyrus and Saul are only just starting though and one can hope that some way we get to see him stumble a few more times. I must strongly recommend that the reader start with Time Bound though to get the full emotion and direction of the series and the dynamic characters Ms. Walker has created. Even Simon, a character that I still haven’t much affection for is an amazing character and his story was a great read that filled in more blanks in the Chronos key world. I was given this copy for an honest review.

Dark Beyond the Stars Anthology where space meets story…. Space opera at its finest; or so says the blurb, is a very diverse compilation of stories that delve into several ideals and ideologies of space life and travel. As with all anthologies there were some I enjoyed more than others. Waiting until the end for 2092 by Rysa Walker was hard to wait until the end for but very much worth it. Her glimpse into the Chronos world she writes so brilliantly was very emotional and moving as well as insightful. Dragonet by Sara Reine held me captive as her character realized what was really the motivation behind her enemy’s defence of their planet and what she did to help save the extinction of a race. Winner Takes All by Elle Casey was a fun escape that left this reader with a taste for more including finding out the basic rules for the game of givit and if we have a human version available to play. Animal Planet by Patrice Fitzgerald was another that captured my interest as it twisted the ideals of evolution of man after restarting life on a new planet.

There are 11 stories in all in this anthology which are followed by a brief interview of the author that not only gave their “background story” but in some cases were a funny and entertaining story in itself. I was very impressed by this novella compilation despite, if I am being quite honest, the fact that space opera’s or rather most books set in a futuristic world don’t always end up high on my TBR list. Yes there were favorites and they tended to be the ones that drew me in on more of an emotional basis but as a whole I was very much entertained by them all. Take a chance on this one. I am confident that readers of many genres will find it an entertaining read.

Here are a few of my personal favorite stories……

2092 by Rysa Walker

Chronoton readings on the planet XE7 that Mila had brought to the attention of the Voshti have them salivating about winning their war with the Lor. Her orders to initiate 20 areas of attack and hope that the people of this world can agree that the attacks were from out of their known world then deceive the inhabitants in this world into believing that they must join the Alliance and fight with them against the Lor. Taking a risk and going after the Chronoton herself is dangerous but when she finds a way to not only take the powerful tool with her but possibly change her own past, saving the one who still held her heart as well as her people from the wars that follow trusting in the right people will be the biggest risk of all.

Dragonet by Sara Reine

Aja Skytoucher was calculating the damage her carriage had already taken when one of the inhabitants of Drakor III attacked her ship. With only one other body on board to help her evade the massive talons of the dragon that hunted them down after their carriage had taken a massive hit she used what she could to both take out the enemy and to make the crash landing as safe as humanly possible. Following the wreckage of her attacker they find an amazing site just beyond. Realizing what must be done and accepting her fate for her choice Aja is nudged into seeing the truth by an unlikely body.

The Event by Automn Kalquist

A powerful novella that brings to light so many of humanities best and worst qualities. Life, death, love, destruction, hate, religion…. All lived by one that holds the fate of the handful of those left to rebuild a future on a new planet. A chance to try again or to put that hope aside and turn off the lights once and for all.

Animal Planet by Patrice Fitzgerald

Jane Blake wanted to volunteer to see the planet…. They needed females and she was female, who really cared that she was 72 and not in her 20’s. Headed to Endrosa and Fort Beta she was leaving behind her entire world.

At Fort Gamma Roark and Curtis found one of the animals that had taken over both Fort Alpha and Beta lumbering towards them. Ready to take it out they stopped when they noticed the recorder that had initially been attached to the first inhabitants on the furry creature. Capturing it they watch the recording of one of the early settlers and how she got separated from her group but as to what happened to her that allowed this creature to have her camera was still a problem to solve.

Protocol A235 by Theresa Kay

Beth is a part of the maintenance crew on their way along with thousands of humans towards Zenith…. One last ditch effort to save humankind. Waking to take her first 30 day stint she finds irregularities…. And what’s more, she finds put the truth behind Protocol A235 and what she must do to save what’s left of the human race.

Winner Takes All by Elle Casey

Langlade was all for a good game of givit and when a pretty young thing was offering up her V-card he had to get in on the deal. Putting up his ship against her offer didn’t harbour a second thought but when she pulled out a hand that next to nothing could beat he knew that he had jumped in water that was too deep.

A Real Cowboy Knows How to Kiss by Stephanie Rowe

A Wyoming Rebels book

4 1/2 HockeyStyxxx

Steen Stockton had put in his time but after 4 years behind bars he wasn’t prepared to deal with not only the pain in his side from saving a young man from the knife that was intended for him but the lack of breath he felt when he faced her again…. The one girl who had changed his outlook on life so long ago.

Helping her friend Josie with her vet practice while she was off in Chicago dealing with family matters,  Erin Chambers never imagined more than a few weeks back in Wyoming would bring her face to face with the one man who she not only crushed on but had dreamed of as the one man who would always be there for her.

The last few years had been hell but Erin had made it through and in the end the working vacation had given her the one thing she had wanted her whole life.  Steen Stockton.  Being with the man who had looked beyond the rich girl everyone else saw and recognized that she was a scared lonely girl who only wanted to be a vet and help the animals she had always loved.  Her parents and her ex were only reminders that she had never lived up to their standards but Steen was something else.  He was the one man she knew would accept her as she was.

10 days to be with the one girl…the one woman who kept him going through the last 4 years of being in prison.

Steens’ stint in prison had left him torn and ready to run and hide but finding a connection with Erin again…. And the girl who he knew by hearing her voice alone after all these years.  He couldn’t risk telling her the truth and lose the one thread of hope that had kept him alive when the doctors had left little hope.

Wow.  OK I love Stephanies work.  Always have but I am loving this series even more every step of the way.  The Stockton brothers are victims.  Victims that have banded together through their upbringing and the vows they made to never let a woman into their hearts and homes that would give them the chance to repeat the horrors they faced as kids.  Steen had one of the hardest shells of all after being betrayed by a woman and paying with his freedom because of her lies but with a few spoken words he opens up and not only allows someone in, he allows the one girl who he knew deep in his heart would never hurt him.  If only he could promise her the same.

Erin had battled her whole life but in a way that was so far from the life Steen had dealt with it was hard to believe they were both victims of parental abuse.  Fighting to make a career for herself in a field she loved was hard especially when her ex was not only a carbon copy of her father with his neglect but threw his infidelities in her face. Erin held on by a thread to a dream of a man that would always had her back when she needed it the most.  If only he could see that she needed more from him than he was ready to give.

This story was very emotional.  Sexy romps intertwined with two people fighting to grasp on to something neither believes they deserve makes it a hard book to put down but watching as they make decisions that have the potential to break them apart forever tugs at the heart strings.  Believe me.  Their story is one that will have you in tears by the end…. Tears of both heartbreak and joy that you have to read for yourself to fully understand the struggles of holding on to the love of your life despite the consequences.

Before the Rain

By JoAnne Kenrick
Before the Rain is book five in  Fated Desire’s multiple author series of stand-alone stories. In JoAnne’s addition to this series, a sworn-off-love Southerner escapes her failing life in Georgia and flees to the UK for a three month ‘no men allowed’ sabbatical where she unwittingly falls for the rustic charm of Rose Farm and its Welsh owner.

Blurb

Three fiancés in three years makes Zoe Chantilly’s relationship column for the Georgia Times her only semblance of commitment…that is until her dating advice takes a dive down the Suwannee and she’s fired.

Unemployed and single, she leaves the sweltering heat of the south and heads to the UK for a man-free break from life. The plan? Get with nature, write a novel, and be alone. Be very much alone. But nature has other plans for Zoe.

Navigating the backcountry roads of Wales seems just as complicated as her love life. A near-collision hones her desires in on Dylan Mostyn, a Leo seething with a raw prowess and macho magnetism the Aquarius in her can’t resist.

This Welshman is as arrogant as he is gorgeous. He’s also her landlord. The undeniable and thunderous attraction between them pinnacles during a karaoke duet at the village fete, but what starts as a no-strings fling quickly spirals toward dangerous ground.

My Review: Before the Rain by Joanne Kenrick

4 Hockeystyxxx

Zoe Chantilly is on a streak…. But it’s not the kind of streak that most people would be proud of unless there is an unknown group that thinks it’s a good thing to be left at the altar.  And after 3 times if there is such a group Zoe would be their idol.  You would think the girl who penned one of the most talked about love columns in the Southern states would be able to pick them better especially when she used the zodiac to help her dole out her advice as well as pick potential husbands.

After her third failed attempt at the altar not only was she down and out but getting ousted from her job for not being the most receptive ear to questions on the love lives of her readers she was off to spend a few months in Wales.  Both to lick her wounds and to work on a project that would make her boss want her back for more than just a weekend journalist.

Dylan Mostyn wasn’t happy that his last tenant had asked that her sister take over the last few months of her rental.  Not that he was happy that he had to resort to renting out the cottage to begin with.  Then on top of it the woman thought that she was Miss America driving the wrong way and almost taking his mirror off.  This was going to be a long 3 months living with both his too smart for her own good sister, an aunt that could turn into a Welsh Dragon at any minute and an American who got under his skin from the first meeting.

After a fateful night that had them grinding on stage singing old karaoke tunes before getting caught in not only a rain storm but a storm of heated need they decide on a compromise.  A summer of being vacation friends with benefits with no strings attached.  Only problem is a sexy Leo was hard to leave behind after a summer of love, fun and dealing with a Welsh Dragon lady even for a career she had dreamed about.

Ok before I read Before the Rain I was in a reading slump.  I was having a hard time staying focused on the story at hand for whatever reasons.  Today I read cover to cover in one afternoon and finished wanting more.  Thank you Joanne for bringing me back!  Zoe and Dylan’s story was a smart, sexy romp that not only was set in a dream destination for me but …. Hello…. Sexy man with an accent?  Yeah, I was hooked from the first slip of Welsh brogue that slipped from that scruffy hunk of a man.  Zoe Chantilly had what I would call a chip on her shoulder.  If pushing away 3 fiancés is any indication that is.  Getting out of her rental and feeling an immediate ping in her panties for the sexy Welshman who had just previously called her who knows what in that sexy language she had no hope of understanding.  Totally get that…. Or wish I got that.  Lucky girl!  And then there is the sexy farmer…. Or rather Prince Farming….  Dylan Mostyn was beyond dreamy.  And I’m not just talking his scruffy handsome looks or his sexy assed…. Ass.  LOL I am talking a dreamy guy that gave up his hopes and dreams to take care of a young sister and aunt after being abandoned by their parents.  That is hot.  And that… was what made me sit up and talk back to my tablet when Zoe had to choose between her career and the life she had always pushed away.  Put this book on your to be bought list….. the links are above in the blurb and the link to goodreads to make sure it’s on your list is there too.  Follow JoAnne on facebook as well.  She always has lots of cool give-aways and interesting conversation for and with her fans.  And as always check out her backlist!

Good Cop:Heroes of Henderson Book 1 by Liz Kelly

Good Cop: Heroes of Henderson Book 1

Good Cop:
Heroes of Henderson Book 1

4 1/2 Hockeystyxxx

Lolly Duval has plans to make it big as a designer but before she finishes school there are a few things she wants to get a step up on while back in Henderson for the summer. The plan was for those two things to be modifying the new athletic cup she had been working on and the other was her own designs for the upcoming show. Instead she finds herself caught in between two handsome police officers and it isn’t a bad place to be! Sexy and stalwart, and all around good guy, Brooks Bennett had been more than a crush of hers forever but the sinfully delicious bad boy Vance Evans could certainly turn her head if her heart wasn’t already taken. Agreeing to help them both was full of good intent but when the lines get crossed and the summer heat escalates she needs to make a stand and let them both know who owns her heart.

Brooks Bennett, good cop, stand up guy, and Golden Boy of Henderson had major plans of his own. Getting Henderson on the map as one of the best places to live in America was up there along with his plans to run and win the mayoral race next election. Having the right woman by his side was a part of that dream and for as long as he could think Lolly DuVal had been the “right woman”. Taking a leap when he heard she was going to be back in town for not only his sisters engagement party but the summer he made sure he had her on his arm for at least the party if not many more nights during the summer. If Vance had not had his hands on her feet the first time he saw her again things might have been less complicated but of course, the seducer of Henderson, the bad boy himself, was involved and thanks to him Lolly would be part and parcel of both their summers. He needed to step up his game and play by the other book if he hoped to win the heart of the girl who stole his years ago.

Vance Evans was not only the “Bad Cop” he was the epitome of the bad boy! Women were an easy conquest of his but once they were bed he didn’t want anything to do with them. Why couldn’t he just like a woman? He wanted the whole package. He wanted a wife and kids, especially now that he had hit the ripe old age of 30 but he had never been able to like a woman let alone fall in love with one. Lolly was a perfect fit for his plan. Hanging out, playing sports and learning how to appreciate a woman as a friend was just what he needed to get on the right track but when he finds that he wants to cross the line with her and become more than just friends he might lose everything else he cherishes along the way.

My procurement of this book was not totally on the up and up…well that is if the inscription is to be believed. “Shell, thanks for stealing my Good Cop!” To be honest, the book was just sitting there waiting to be claimed and I did qualify to pick it as my prize, I just skipped the line because it was the last one on the table! LOL I am so glad I did! But if you want to send one of these handsome cops after me bring on the cuffs! I loved the sexy and fun banter between Lolly and her guys! Lolly is fun loving, cute and has a smart sassy attitude that I loved! The guys are uuuunnnnnffff! Yummy! Sexy! Fun! And I was honestly back and forth in my dedication between them throughout…. and TBH was really looking forward to a little threesome action! Bennett is just…. well I can’t seem to say, he was awesome, more than awesome! And Vance is… gah! You know… I still am torn. This is why it was such a good book! I know who I wanted to win Lolly’s heart but I to this day continue to waver back and forth! On top of this was the secondary romance of two characters that gave the reader a little more spice since our “Good Cop” was adamant about making things perfect for his love. Yeah. Maybe that’s it! Bennett was perfect! Vance was perfect! OK that didn’t help! Buy this book and help me figure it out! Oh and BTW…. I would totally steal both the Good Cop again….and the Bad Cop too!

Hidden Prey from Cheyenne McCray

DHS Agent Landon Walker had been hiding from the world for too long. Dealing with the loss of his fiancee over a year before he knew he had to come back to the living. He needed to start building the relationships with his friends again that he had left neglected for so long. Walking out of his grandmothers house he opens his arms to help a woman running from the demons chasing her and soon finds that her courage and strength is the balm he needs to help heal him.

Tori Cox needed to get away from the abusive relationship she was in. Going home to Bisbee and her parents was the first step in breaking the hold her boyfriend held on her. Walking down the street to find she remembered almost everything from her youth growing up there was helping her accept that she had finally done the right thing despite leaving her belongings behind. Stumbling into a murder in progress she runs for her life and finds herself in the arms of a tall dark stranger….a stranger she needs to protect her from all the people hunting her down.

Stepping away from the attraction he felt for Tori wasn’t an option despite the dangers to both of them. She needed his help, he needed to help her and together they needed to prove to themselves that they deserved to fight for each other. The dangers threatening them are very deadly and there is nothing more important in their fight than to trust in the love they share.

My very first stumbles into the world of Cheyenne McCray were Chosen Prey and Moving Target and with them I was hooked into her books and devoured as many as I could get a hold of. When I heard that the new series, Lawmen, was a part of this same world I was hungry to get my hands on the book! Thankfully I wasn’t kept waiting too long and in a day I had fed my appetite with this hot sexy read. Landon is still recouping from an accident that changed his life but is ready to emerge from his self preservation world of too much work and too much alcohol. The tall, sexy and brooding DHS agent gets more than he asks for when Tori runs into his life. Literally! Tori’s world had always been her music and sharing it with the world but after her relationship runs sour she needs to start fresh. Starting over never was supposed to come with threats to not only her life but the lives of everyone who she had ever cared for. Ms. McCray is brilliant as she wraps you up in Tori’s flight for her life and Landon’s re-emergence from his self inflicted exile from the world. This suspenseful romance is a brilliant ride from start to finish with emotional twists and turns that this reader never saw coming as they fought for their lives, their love and their future together.

Tall Dark and Vampire by Sara Humphreys

Tall, Dark, and Vampire

Tall, Dark, and Vampire

5 Tombstones

Olivia Hollingsworth had been haunted by the one man she had lost for centuries. One man who had only shared one night with her but she had lost her heart to for an eternity. Thoughts that she had put him behind her had been brought back to focus twenty years ago when the dreams began but she never thought that it meant that there was more to it than a life time of celibacy and the resulting sexual frustration. Seeing her “Douglas” walk into her bar wasn’t something she had expected but when he was investigating a murder that had connections to her coven she had to protect those in her care first before she trusted the man who turned her libido on after centuries in the off position.

Detective Doug Paxton had some knowledge of the paranormal world but he didn’t want to dwell on things he really didn’t want to accept. People close to him had opened his eyes to the possibility but acceptance was another thing. Walking into the bar and seeing the woman who had been haunting his very sexual dreams for what seemed like forever couldn’t be just a coincidence right? Nothing was as simple as that, especially when his investigation into recent murders kept bringing him back into her orbit and his desire for the flesh and blood version of the sexy red-head was even more intense than the connection they shared in his dreams.

Someone was out to get Olivia and it seemed to be personal but that didn’t stop her from thinking of the sexy detective constantly and wanting to find out just what connection they shared. Digging into the investigation all leads kept bringing him back to Olivia and it isn’t all good when he wakes up after being attacked. Wakes up with news that his life as he knew it had been forever changed and the woman herself was the one to decide his fate. Despite everything they must push things aside and work together now more than ever to get rid of the threat before more people lose their life to whoever has a vendetta against them.

Wow… just wow. This has the taste of one hell of a series. The spin off from Humphreys Amoveo series, this book is a great jumping off point for a fantastic vampire collection. Olivia and Doug are awesome together. Doug’s reluctance to accept his fate makes the tension in the book jump up and wrap around your heart as does Olivia’s turmoil for her part in his change. My emotions were tugged left and right throughout their story as they deal with acceptance of the past, their real connection as bloodmates and what the future holds because of who they really are. The twists and turns and revelations in this book will keep the reader on the edge of their seat! I am hungry for more already!

Vampire Trouble by Sara Humphreys

Vampire Trouble

Vampire Trouble

5 Tombstones

Shane Quesada, Presidium Sentry had been existing. Doing what was needed to protect the current czar’s and those before them. Never did he imagine that the legend was true about a bloodmate and never did he think that he would find his in the form of a feisty newly turned vampire with a turbulent past.

Maya wanted more than working in the bar for her maker. She needed to remember her past, find a way to stop hating the world and have some adventure along the way. Taking a position in another bar with a very different vampire than the ones she was with was a start. Dealing with the visiting werewolf royalty would give her something else to concentrate on other than the continued dreams of her violent past and of the sexy vampire that somehow breached her mind and was now becoming a totally different focus for her. One that she wasn’t sure she could handle.

Leaving the city together, the two escape the threat that is after Maya but find themselves entering a very different threat. One that neither wanted to fight as they give in to the bloodmate bond that would bring them closer to each other than any before. With the incite of a powerful gypsy, they find more than they expected when looking into Maya’s past and with that new knowledge it gives her a new weapon to use against the threat chasing her down.

This is one powerful, heart wrenching and emotional story. As much as I loved Tall, Dark and Vampire I think I lost my heart to Shane in this story. The stalwart vampire had always followed the rules, kept to himself and fought for the Presidium, never thinking of himself or his wants and needs. His connection to Maya is beautiful, their journey emotional and touching as she found a way to release the “demons” chasing her and give in to her desires to be loved by a man and push the terrors behind her. Maya is a strong heroine and she captivated me with her determination and the way she pushed through even after her heart was crushed to do what was right for everyone in their world. I was most impressed with the way she grew and blossomed from a self centered creature to one who was willing to sacrifice for everyone from one book to the next made this book hard to put down. Kudos Ms. Humphreys! Can’t wait to read the next one!

No Accounting for Cowboys by Leah Braemel

4.5 Hockeystyxxx

I like to think that I am up to date and on the ball but I’m afraid I have dropped the ball a little bit lately.  One of these little blunders is the fact that I some how missed the first book in Leah Braemel’s series The Grady Legacy.  That didn’t stop me from grabbing up the opportunity to pick up Leah’s latest Carina Press offering No Accounting for Cowboys!  And I am forever grateful that I was able to do this and share my views on the book.  Getting to catch up with Leah in New Orleans was even a bigger bonus!  Romantic Times Convention is a great way to interact with the authors, like Leah, that you love!

But back to the book at hand…. or rather the sexy as hell singing cowboy and his ‘not your typical accountant’ love!  Paige and Jake’s chemistry oozes off the pages from the first moment they lay eyes on each other across the bar!  Getting to know each other is definitely on the menu at the country and western hangout Slick’s!  Both, however, have more than a little baggage along with them thanks to their families and although wanting to dive in and taste the offerings that first night they find a way to put their desires on hold and let them simmer on the burner like the good Texas BBQ Slick’s is known for.  Finding out they will not only be working together over the next little bit only wet’s their appetite and a sampling is definitely what the reader and the two lovers are waiting for but like all good BBQ there is a mess involved and it might take more than a couple of wet wipes to clean it up if the two want to keep on the steady diet of romance, love and sex that brought them together in the first place.  If only their family secrets were in the recipe department and not life changing like the ones Paige and Jake have to deal with.

I absolutely fell in love with Jake.  Strong, sexy, loyal and talented… he is so amazing and I was as broken as he was when the truth comes out about the one thing that meant the world to him!  And Paige was no passive little heroine.  She was awesome!  A definite fighter who had battled and worked her way up from nothing to become a professional and get her degree.  Her little chip on her shoulder gave her an edge that made her fun, sexy and a little snarky!  I loved it!  If you love emotion this book has it in spades!  The tug on my heart when Jake faces the truth about who he really was tore more than a few tears from me and made me keep turning the pages to get over the pain secrets from the past as fast as possible!

Image

Paige Reynolds is a woman who will not let anything stand in her path. Saying she had less than perfect childhood is an understatement and now a certified accountant and with a new job she is ready to prove to herself and anyone else that she is nothing like her mother or her father when it comes to business dealings. Getting the news she was going to be sent out to Bulls Hollow Ranch, the family of the man her father still holds a grudge with, to settle their books after a trusted employee screwed them over will put her in position to prove herself but that doesn’t mean she can’t relax a bit before she jumps in head first tomorrow. Spending a little time flirting with the sexy cowboy up on stage at Slick’s seems to be just what she needed to get her mind off everything piling on her plate. Walking into the office at Bulls Hollow and finding the scruff faced cowboy grinning at her should have her packing her calculator and running but something told her to stay and ride out whatever was coming her way with the man with two names she met only hours before and who already was under her skin.

Jake Grady needed this night off. Needed to shrug off the mess back at the ranch, both with their financial troubles and the rift between him and his best friend Gabe Larson, or rather his half brother Gabe. Shit was piling high. Getting up on stage doing what he had always loved was just the distraction he needed…. Well that and the sexy woman at the bar eyeing him up like a piece of candy. Taking the stage as J T Larson had always been a release for him but also a thorn that liked to prick him when his brother Ben continued to put him down every time he picked up a guitar and tried to show him how much music meant to him. Stepping up and putting himself in front of the sexy lady sure turned his night around when she didn’t shoot him down and had him hoping she would be back the next time his band played… back and ready to do more than flirt with him at the bar. Never in his wildest dreams did he think he would find her in his own home, or rather his Ma’s home ready to dig into their financial mess and straighten out what was left of Bulls Hollow. He liked the girl in leather but something about the one in front of him made him think he could get to like this part of her too. A girl with two sides just like him would be perfect if only he could talk her into it too.

Paige and Jake find themselves falling. Fast. But the secrets both have carried for their families and now themselves might be too much to over come. Dealing with the impending audit, Paige finds herself embedded in even more secrets and when Jake has to face the truth it causes a divide that not only pulls him away from her but rocks him so hard there might be no coming back for him. Jakes trust and faith in a family he had always found solace in being a part of now pulled out from under him he needs Paige to help him deal but her promise to another is yet another betrayal he can’t deal with. Another reason to leave and not look back. Professional as always Paige finishes her job but leaving the job is one thing… leaving without trying to claim her heart back is another that she cannot give up on without one last try.

Highland Dawn by Donna Grant

HIghland Dawn

Moira had thought she would always be alone. Although she was happy to watch the love her sisters had found she knew if she was to fulfil her part of the prophecy she would never have a family or love of her own. There had only been one man she had ever thought of in that way anyway. Dartayous. The Druid warrior who both intrigued and frustrated her.
Dartayous had promised to keep Moira safe. One vow he took very seriously no matter how the woman turned him inside out. He could not tell her why he kept her and every other woman before her at arms length. Why he poked and prodded her instead of pulling her close and letting her know what she did to him.

Sent together to fulfill the prophecy and do their part to help release the fae from their prison they find a young babe who tugs at Moira’s heart but she had a destiny and being a mother was not a part of it and would never be with her heart belonging to the stubborn warrior with her on the journey. Taking a babe along with them will not aid them on their quest but when the woman asks to bring him along with them asks he knows he cannot deny her and say no to the woman he had ever loved, and for an immortal that was a very long time. Arriving at the destined spot they find out the old crones prediction was right and they did in fact have the key to the fae world with them the entire time but there was no easy path to follow when another has plans for Moira. Plans of a man that had already caused her and her family pain and suffering and that included making her the new Queen and taking over both worlds.
Lugus had set in motion his plans but unless the fates could be changed they could be the downfall of both the fae and the human realms forever.

Donna Grant has been a fave of mine since I read her Sisters of Magic series years ago. My addiction to her Dark Warrior series is not a secret either. So too this series, and this, the final chapter in the Druids Glen series. Moira is a strong woman and her heart is the most generous and strongest part of her as she keeps its secret desires hidden even from herself at times then opens it up to not only the man she loves but gives a part of it to another who is not as deserving when she sees his true self beneath the guise he has worn for most of his life. Dartayous is a warrior through and through but the secret he keeps hidden deters him from what he has desired most and the one that could make him happy and whole. Their journey is not easy and they are both tested but when they both are forced to chose it is one path that they both walk down, together and forever. Another great read from Ms. Grant and one I would highly recommend!
